Frog Orr Ewing
All Saints' Church vicar and initiator of the partnership between the church and Bradfield Club. Friends with Future.
"Great revolutions and significant works in society ususally begin wth small groups of friends with a common concern, a joint vision and the energy and commitment to see things through."
The abolition of slavery had at its heart a group of South Londoners who would not sit back and do nothing whilst others were denied hope and opportunity.
As the vicar of All Saints, it has been a privilege to watch countless Peckham residents and congregation members give up their time, energy and resources to engage with the needs and dreams of Peckham through our partnership with the Bradfield Club and the community in the surrounding area.
Our relationship with the club started in prayer for the community, and grew as we began to throw energy behind making a difference with young people in Peckham through many clubs we have been running for children and youth across Peckham and especially with students at the Academy at Peckham and younger children at Oliver Goldsmith school. So our partnership with the Bradfield Club began by helping with rubbish clearance and redecoration, running summer programmes, and delivering computer skills and courses for excluded children during the week in association with local charities. Summer 2007 saw Beats 'n Blessings come from New York, and the start of work towards equipping young people with beats and lyric writing and the work of volunteers on the Peckham Urban Mission Placement Scheme.
2008 is filled with prospects, a strong team working in the club, young people with promise and determination, who we believe are emerging leaders and transformers of society. The ethos and energy of volunteers and local residents is absolutely vital if what began in prayer is to end with transformation of Peckham lives and a Peckham future forged by friends.
Bradfield College
Peter Roberts, Headmaster:
"From the beginning of the 20th Century the Bradfield Club in Peckham has been an integral part of the extended Bradfield family. At the College end, pupils and staff have greatly enjoyed visits from Club members to our unspoilt village in rural Berkshire, introducing the Londoners to the delights of the Pang, golf and the rituals of boarding school life! Equally, members of staff, Old Bradfieldians and, more recently, members of the Bradfield Foundation, have got involved in the administration, financial health and upkeep of the Club. The Club and College share many ethos values, the importance of a supportive community to help young people develop, the uplifting effect of competitive sports and forming friendships in a safe and welcoming context."
